Heartbreak strikes as a beloved family pet is snatched from a doorstep by an unexpected culprit: an Amazon delivery driver! Imagine the shock and devastation of a pet owner discovering their furry family member has been taken, not by a stranger lurking in the shadows, but by someone entrusted with delivering packages right to their door. This is precisely the distressing situation a Yorkshire family is facing.
Carl Crowther, a 53-year-old maintenance worker, was expecting an Amazon delivery on Monday, January 19th. Unfortunately, he had to leave for his job about an hour before the package arrived, around 2:30 PM. Little did he know that when he reviewed his security footage the following day, he would witness a scene that would leave him and his family heartbroken.
The video revealed a seemingly ordinary delivery driver approaching the house. As no one answered the door, the driver began looking for a suitable spot to leave the parcel. But here's where it gets controversial... instead of simply placing the package, the driver's attention was caught by Nora, the family's cherished cat. The footage clearly shows the driver walking right up to the door, picking Nora up, and then, without a second thought, walking away with her.
This alleged abduction appears to have been a spur-of-the-moment decision. According to Mr. Crowther's account, the driver was conducting his duties as usual outside their home in Elland, West Yorkshire, before this unexpected act. "He doesn’t get a response at the door as no one was in, so he looks for somewhere safe to put the parcel," Mr. Crowther explained. "He then clocked the cat."
On Tuesday, Mr. Crowther expressed his deep concern to YorkshireLive, stating that he and his family were "really worried" about Nora's well-being. Nora is a homebody, accustomed to her familiar surroundings, and not at all used to being in new or unfamiliar places. "This morning, after she’d been missing since yesterday lunch, for some reason I looked at the cameras to see if she’d been about over the late afternoon/evening," he recounted. "We were devastated when we saw the driver lingering about waiting to seize his opportunity. It was total shock and disbelief when he picked her up and shoved her into his car."
The urgency for Nora's safe return is amplified by her medical needs. Mr. Crowther emphasized that Nora requires medication for a heart murmur, making her absence even more critical.
The incident has been officially reported to West Yorkshire Police, who have confirmed that a "crime of theft has been recorded, and inquiries remain ongoing."
However, Mr. Crowther expressed significant dissatisfaction with Amazon's response. He stated that he had reported the distressing incident to the company but felt he received little to no assistance in locating Nora. And this is the part most people miss... he was appalled by their question: "asking what monetary value we’d put on the cat." Mr. Crowther passionately questioned, "How can you put a value on somebody’s pet?" A spokesperson for Amazon has since confirmed that the company is actively investigating the incident and has been in contact with the police.
What do you think about this situation? Is it ever justifiable for someone to take a pet, even if they seem to be acting out of misguided kindness? Or is this a clear case of theft, regardless of the circumstances? Share your thoughts in the comments below – we’d love to hear your perspective!
