Imagine planning a dream vacation to Japan, only to discover that your money stretches further than it has in decades. This remarkable opportunity arises as the Australian dollar soars to its highest value against the Japanese yen in 40 years, igniting a wave of tourism enthusiasm among Australians. According to foreign exchange experts, this surge in the Aussie dollar allows travelers from Australia to enjoy their trips to Japan at a significantly reduced cost.
As of Monday, the Australian dollar was trading at an impressive 110.79 yen, a level not reached since 1986, as confirmed by Ray Attrill, NAB's Head of FX Strategy. The evolving exchange rate is exceptionally favorable for tourists, with more than one million Australians visiting Japan in 2025—a historic milestone.
"For Australians, Japan is arguably one of the most affordable destinations in the developed world right now," Mr. Attrill remarked. "In terms of cost-effectiveness, there's never been a better time for Aussies to explore Japan."
Currency fluctuations have contributed to this advantageous situation for travelers. Analysts noted that the Australian dollar has seen robust performance against currencies like the US dollar this year. Although the dollar was valued at 109.2 yen recently, this figure still reflects a significant increase compared to rates from the past few decades.
Carol Kong, an economist and currency strategist at CBA, added that anticipation surrounding an imminent interest rate hike has further bolstered the strength of the Australian dollar. "This momentum has propelled the Aussie dollar upward, thereby enhancing its value against the yen," she explained.
To find similar exchange rates, one must look back to the 1990s, indicating how historically strong the Aussie yen conversion is at present. Notably, the timing of this surge coincides with the recent election victory of Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who has proposed plans to loosen government spending. However, these fiscal strategies have raised alarms regarding Japan's national debt, causing unease in the bond market and contributing to a weakening yen.
With a record-breaking 1.06 million Australians visiting Japan in 2025—an increase of 15% from previous years—according to the Japan National Tourism Organization, it's clear that the weak yen has made Japan an attractive destination. Overall, Japan welcomed approximately 42.7 million tourists in 2025, exceeding the previous year's record and prompting authorities to caution against "over-tourism." This influx of visitors has even led to the cancellation of events like the cherry blossom festival in Fujiyoshida.
The strengthening Australian dollar means that travelers can enjoy enhanced purchasing power while exploring Japan. Yet, a pressing question remains: will it become even cheaper to visit soon?
Mr. Attrill posed this dilemma, stating, "Potential travelers face the uncertainty of whether they should secure their holiday plans for next year right now."
Currently, there are no indications of a reversal in the upward trend of the Australian dollar against the yen. Ms. Kong anticipates that the dollar will continue to hold its ground. "However, keep in mind that currency values are notoriously volatile. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the dollar-yen exchange rate fluctuate beyond our current projections," she cautioned.
