Extending the presidential term.
In a resounding vote of 90 to 19, the amendment was approved, setting the presidential term at seven years, with the possibility of renewal only once. This means that a president can serve a maximum of 14 years in office. The statement released by the National Assembly on Saturday clarified the implications, stating that the President of the Republic will be elected by direct universal suffrage for a term of seven years, renewable only once. Furthermore, the amendment reinforces the limit of two terms for any individual serving as President of the Republic.
This change isn't limited to the presidency. The extended term also applies to mayors and municipal councillors, impacting local governance as well.
But here's where it gets interesting: these amendments come just before the 2026 presidential elections. President Patrice Talon, who took office in 2016 and is currently serving his second term, has publicly stated that he will not seek a third term. This announcement has led to speculation and intrigue.
And this is the part most people miss... Benin, while relatively stable compared to its neighbors in the region, faced a significant challenge last September. Prosecutors revealed they had thwarted a suspected coup attempt. The details are quite intriguing, involving a former sports minister allegedly caught handing over a substantial sum of money to the commander of the republican guard and head of Talon’s security.
