A Triumph for Northern Indie Gaming: Empyreal's Victory at the Game Republic Awards
The Game Republic Awards, a prestigious event in the gaming industry, has crowned its winners, and the spotlight shines on Empyreal, an indie game developed by Silent Games, as the Best Indie Game Made in the North.
The ceremony, held at WX Wakefield in Yorkshire, was a gathering of over 500 representatives from the games industry, hosted by Game Republic's MD, Jamie Sefton. The Best Indie Game Made in the North category, a highly anticipated award, was decided by a public vote, with Empyreal emerging victorious from a field of 15 talented nominees.
But here's where it gets controversial... While Empyreal took the top spot, other notable games like The Siege and the Sandfox by Cardboard Sword and Starship Troopers Continuum by XR Games also vied for the title, showcasing the incredible talent and diversity within the Northern gaming scene.
And this is the part most people miss... The Game Republic Awards also recognized industry veterans and pioneers. Ian Stewart, founder of Gremlin Graphics, a Sheffield-based developer, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Gremlin Graphics, formed in 1984, left an indelible mark on the industry with titles like Zool and Premier Manager, but the studio's journey came to an end in 2003 after being acquired by Infogrames.
In addition to the awards, the event showcased over 60 games from Northern games companies, including a special partnership with the Scottish Game Developers Association, which brought ten games from Scotland to the forefront.
