A bold statement has been made by Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative Party leader, declaring that centrist ideas are no longer welcome within the party's ranks. This move has sparked controversy and left many questioning the future of the party's ideological direction.
In a recent speech delivered at Westminster, Badenoch aimed to outline her vision for the party amidst a series of defections to Reform UK. She took aim at what she described as the "tantrum" of Robert Jenrick and others who have expressed reservations about her rightward shift.
However, Badenoch's rejection of centrist approaches extends beyond just Jenrick. She explicitly dismissed the efforts of Andy Street and Ruth Davidson, former leaders who have formed a new group within the party to cater to centrist and center-right voters. While Badenoch welcomes any support that can help the party win elections, she makes it clear that this does not include policies that deviate from her right-leaning agenda.
"They need to recognize the agenda I'm setting," Badenoch emphasized, adding, "I'm the leader, and it's my vision that needs backing."
Badenoch's direction is crystal clear: a Reform-inspired policy platform focused on reducing immigration, opposing net zero policies, cutting social security, and lowering taxes. She proudly states, "My Conservative Party has moved to the right every day since I became leader."
"We want true Conservatives," Badenoch declares, seemingly unapologetic for those who may feel alienated by the new direction. She continues, "The past is behind us; we're not trying to recreate the past."
While Badenoch argues that her approach seeks to find "common ground," the explicit rejection of conservatism's historically strong centrist tradition is likely to cause concern among some party members.
This shift could also leave the Conservatives electorally vulnerable, given that they lost around 60 seats to the Liberal Democrats in the last election, largely due to centrist Tory voters abandoning the party.
Despite these potential pitfalls, Badenoch's speech was met with enthusiasm from MPs and party members, particularly her scathing attack on defectors to Reform, including her former shadow justice secretary, Jenrick.
"To those defecting, I say this: your disagreement is not with our policies, but with not winning the leadership contest or getting into the Lords. This is a tantrum disguised as politics," Badenoch concluded.
